Is your job killing you?


According to a Department of Health report in 2013 the top five killers in the UK are heart disease, cancer, stroke, liver and respiratory diseases such as emphysema, COPD and asthma. Collectively these diseases prematurely killed more than 150,000 under 75’s in England alone.

The Department of Heath estimates that two thirds (approx 103,000) of these deaths were preventable. It’s no secret that regular exercise and a good diet can dramatically reduce the risk of heart disease. Nonetheless, nearly 80percent of adults don’t get the recommended amount of exercise each week (2.5 hours of moderate aerobic activity or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigourous activity). Currently, every 3 minutes someone in the UK is struck by a heart attack. Given how critical fitness is to overall health, it’s worth taking a look at exercise in the one place where nearly all of us will spend a good chunk of our lives: the workplace.

Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The main components of yoga are postures (a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility) and breathing.  A perfect relaxing yet challenging class after a day in the office.


What are the health benefits of yoga?

Dozens of scientific trials have been published on yoga. Most studies suggest yoga is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity, especially strength, flexibility and balance. There’s some evidence that regular yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and painsincluding lower back pain, depression and stress.



Pilates has something to offer people of all ages and ability. It aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. Pilates was developed by German born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health are closely connected and here at The London Dance Company, we agree!


What are the health benefits of Pilates?

Practitioners say regular Pilates practice can help improve posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility, as well as relieve stress and tension.


The tiny movements in barre can help you get stronger. The isometric contractions that make up the bulk of a barre class occur when the
muscle tenses without changing length. Isometric exercise is a great way to maintain muscle strength.


What are the health benefits of Barre?

You’ll target multiple muscle groups at once. You’ll improve your mind body connection as well as the added bonus of a little weight loss too.



Zumba is perfect for everybody! It works by taking the “work” out of workout, by mixing low intensity and high intensity moves for an interval style, calorie burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you’ll see why Zumba classes are often called exercise in disguise.
